Sun City is a master planned retirement community known for the active lifestyle of its senior residents. Sun City began as a partnership between builder Del Webb and cotton farmer J.G. Boswell, who owned the land. Sun City opened on New Year's Day 1960 and was a screaming success, selling over 200 homes in just 3 days. Today, Sun City encompasses nearly 9,000 acres, 1,200 of which are golf courses, making it a “golfers’paradise.” In fact, the electric golf cart is the favorite mode of transportation around the city. Sun City deed restrictions require at least one resident per household to be 55 years or older.
As you would imagine, most of the 40,000 resident of Sun City are retired, but they are certainly not without something to do! This wonderful community is just 17 miles northwest of Phoenix and boasts 7 community recreation centers, 8 golf courses and 2 lakes. There are over 350 activities and club choices to keep residents busy! Among them are swimming, tennis, bowling, dance, music, cultural activities, drama, arts, crafts, cards, billiards, shuffleboard…….the list goes on and on! Also located in Sun City are The Sun Bowl Outdoor Amphitheater, and the Sundome Center for Performing Arts, which can seat about 7,000 people. There truly is something for everyone!

Lake Pleasant Regional Park is north of Sun City and offers water sports, camping and picnic facilities. The lake is one of the largest lakes in the Southwest. The more adventuresome can explore the ancient Indian petroglyphs while hiking and camping in the nearby White Tanks Regional Park. Another fun place to visit is the Pioneer Arizona Living History Museum where visitors can enjoy a replica of an 1880s Arizona village with historic buildings from original town sites. During the winter months, costumed volunteers put on demonstrations including quilting and blacksmithing.
